UNC has received approval of its eligibility application for the U.S. Department of Education’s Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP), which makes UNC eligible to pursue federal grant opportunities that support institutional capacity, student success and student-serving initiatives.
The application process was led by Rudy Vargas, Director of La Casita Cultural Center, in partnership with the HSI Steering Committee and faculty and staff from across the university. Their collaborative efforts have positioned UNC to pursue funding that can further strengthen the university’s ability to serve students.
This year’s eligibility process reflects an important change from previous years, where institutions were not awarded or renewed Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) status through this year’s application. Instead, the application focused solely on determining eligibility for federal funding through the SIP. As a result, eligible institutions, including UNC, may now compete for future SIP grant opportunities. Although this year’s process did not include HSI designation, UNC remains committed to fostering an inclusive, student-centered environment and supporting the success of its diverse student body, including nearly one in three students who identify as Latine.
Additional information about the SIP, including future funding opportunities, application materials and program updates, will be posted on the Department of Education’s SIP webpage. Faculty and staff interested in learning more or exploring grant opportunities are encouraged to visit the .
