First-Year Students: Do You Need a Housing Exemption?
Most first-year students—meaning students attending college for the first time—are required to live on campus during their first year at UNC.
If you believe you qualify for an exemption, you’ll need to submit a request through your housing portal.
Choose the form that best fits your situation:
- If you’re living in the local area – complete the form titled “”
- If you need an exemption for another reason – complete the form titled “.”
Make sure to submit your request as early as possible so we have time to review it before housing assignments are finalized.

Subleasing at Arlington Park
If you’re living in Arlington Park, you can sublet your space during the summer session鈥攁s long as the person you’re subletting to is:
- Another UNC student
- Not already signed up for summer housing
Planning to sublet during a different term?
Reach out to the Housing team first to discuss your options.
Subleasing can be a great way to keep your space while you’re away鈥攋ust make sure everything鈥檚 approved and in place before making arrangements.
Pet Friendly
If you are a current pet friendly resident, another residential student can look over your pet for you while you are away from campus. You will need to fill out a form, get permission from your suite mates, and submit the form in your housing portal.
To get started, go to your housing portal and find the 鈥淧et Friendly – Pet Sitter Release鈥� form under 鈥淢y Forms鈥� on the left side.

Want to Move Rooms? Here’s How
If you’re currently living on campus and would like to request a room change, you’re welcome to .
Requests are processed in the order they’re received and depend on space availability within your current hall.
Fall Semester Room Moves:
- Request form opens: September 8, 2025 (Fall drop deadline)
- Last day to move: November 25, 2025
Note: Requests not completed by the deadline will roll over to spring
Spring Semester Room Moves:
- Request form opens: January 27, 2026 (Spring drop deadline)
- Last day to move: April 21, 2026
Be sure to submit your request early if you’re hoping to make a change—space is limited and moves aren’t guaranteed.
Petition for Release
If you’re a current resident and need to leave campus housing, you can submit a request to be released from your housing contract.
Keep in mind:
- Submitting a request does not guarantee that your contract will be canceled
- Each request is reviewed individually
