If you are considering coming to the Counseling Center, you may have questions. You are welcome to call us at 970-351-2496 and we will do our best to answer your questions. If you would like to browse, below you’ll find answers to our most frequently asked questions.

Common Student Questions

There are a lot of reasons students access services at the counseling center.  Common reasons students come to the Counseling Center are:

  • homesickness
  • identity exploration
  • relationship issues
  • stress
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • trauma
  • and adjustment to college

If we are unable to meet your needs at our center, we will provide referrals to community resources that will be able to provide appropriate care.

Just give us a call at 970-351-2496 to schedule your first appointment with the UNC Counseling Center.
Once you’re scheduled, we’ll send you some quick online forms to complete ahead of time.
At your appointment, you’ll meet with a counselor to talk about what’s going on and explore the best support options for you.

We’re here to help—let’s take the next step together.

Good news—most counseling services are free for UNC students! This includes:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Crisis drop-in appointments

We’re here to support your well-being, but the UNC Counseling Center does not provide assessments or documentation for emotional support animals (ESAs).

If you’re looking for ESA documentation, we recommend connecting with an outside licensed mental health provider. Let us know if you need help finding one!

Yes—if you’re taking summer classes, you’re eligible for counseling services during the summer months.

Not enrolled for summer? You can still access services if you were registered in the Spring semester and are already registered for the upcoming Fall.

Have questions about your eligibility? Just give us a call at 970-351-2496.

Counseling services are available only to currently enrolled students.

If you were receiving services before graduation, you may be eligible for up to three wrap-up sessions after you graduate. These sessions are designed to help you transition and connect with outside support if needed.

You can access drop-in crisis services Monday-Friday 9-11am and 1-4 PM. If you are struggling afterhours, on weekends, or even holidays, you can call our phone number (970-351-2496) to talk with a crisis counselor. If you feel that this is a serious and imminent life-threatening circumstance, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.

Your counselor can refer you to the University Health Center on-campus and help you get connected there for medication evaluation and management.  Please be aware there are potentially fees for these services. You can also call and speak directly with them to schedule.

Prefer to see someone off-campus? We’re happy to connect you with a community provider as well. Just let the counselor know that you are interested in medication.

Yes! The UNC Counseling Center offers therapy sessions through video or phone for students who prefer or need remote support.

It’s a flexible way to take care of your mental health—wherever you are. Just give us a call to get started!”

We ask that you schedule your own appointment—it’s an important step in taking ownership of your well-being.

Parents or loved ones are welcome to support you through the process, but we’ll need to speak with you directly to set up your appointment.

No. Your counseling records and attendance are confidential and protected under ºÚÁÏÉçÇø mental health law.

If you’d like us to share information with someone (like a parent or professor), you’ll need to sign a release of information first.

Just like medical records, your counseling records are not part of your academic record. Your privacy matters—and we take it seriously.
