State Licensure Boards

If your profession requires you to be licensed, it’s important to know that every state sets its own rules about what license is needed and the requirements for obtaining licensure.

This page will help you find licensing agencies in each state to learn more about licensure requirements for your profession.

Why Licensure Varies by State

Many professions are licensed in all 50 states. Others might only be licensed in certain states, or may have very different requirements depending on where you live. This is because each state sets its own licensure requirements. It’s important to know that:

Find Your State's Licensing Agency

Below, you’ll find links to licensing boards in each state. You can visit these sites to help you understand what education, training, or tests you need to satisfy licensure requirements. Additionally, you can find information on the application process and contact information for licensing agencies in your state.

Licensing requirements can change over time, so always check for the most up-to-date information from state licensing boards.

Below are links to each state’s licensing board(s) for clinical mental health counseling, marriage, couples, and family counseling/therapy, and rehabilitation counseling. These professions are regulated in all states.

In many states, one board oversees both clinical mental health counseling and marriage, couples, and family counseling/therapy. When a state uses a separate board or a separate webpage for each counseling area, we note that below.

When a state requires a supervisor license or approval, it is handled by the same board for that profession. Rehabilitation counseling is regulated by the same board as mental health counseling in all states, and school counseling is usually licensed through the state’s educator licensing agency. Refer to the Education section for details.

Below are links to each state’s educator licensing agency for K–12 roles, including initial teacher licensure/endorsements, school administration/leadership, special education, and school personnel/pupil services.

In every state, working in K–12 schools usually requires a state license or certificate from the education department or educator licensing board. Some school-based roles—such as school counseling, school psychology, educational interpreting, speech-language pathology, audiology, and nursing—may also need a separate license from a health or professional board. Requirements vary by state, so check which agency (or agencies) regulate your role.

For help with educator licensure, visit the Office of Educator Licensure and contact Dr. Charles Warren, University Licensure Officer, at Charles.Warren@unco.edu.
