Math Placement Test
Most students at UNC must take the ALEKS placement test before starting math or statistics classes. This online test takes approximately 90 minutes and covers a range of math skills, from basic to precalculus. After the test, you’ll get access to a study tool to help you review and improve.
Bonus tip: Using the study tool can help you feel more prepared, even if you’re in the class you want.
Why Study Mathematical Sciences?
Mathematics BS
If you enjoy and excel at math, pursuing a career in mathematics can lead to higher job satisfaction.聽Studying math opens up many great career options.
For example, a BS in Mathematics at UNC can lead to careers in teaching, technology, research and data-focused jobs. You can choose to focus on Computer Science, Statistics and Data Science, or Pure and Applied Math. If you want to become a teacher, you can earn a license to teach math in middle or high school.
Computer Science BS
The BS in Computer Science program prepares you to design and improve software and systems that power today鈥檚 tech-driven world. You鈥檒l discover how to handle difficult problems. You鈥檒l improve security and performance. Also, you鈥檒l design smarter, user-friendly technology.
Our program blends computing with other sciences. It supports fields like AI, cybersecurity, data management, graphics, networking and human-computer interaction. This way, you鈥檙e prepared for the future of technology!
UNC math education students dive into coursework that prepares them for real classrooms across 黑料社区.
Data Science and Statistics BS
With our Mathematics programs, you will be ready for a career in teaching or in data science. Data science is one of the fastest-growing fields in the United States. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects jobs to grow 36% from 2023 to 2033. So you will graduate not only with the knowledge and the skills to succeed but also with promising job prospects and a bright future.
Build a Strong Foundation in Math Education
You’ll gain deep mathematical knowledge and gain practical classroom experience. Graduates are well-prepared to become teachers in middle and high schools, ready to inspire the next generation of problem-solvers.
This degree opens the door to a meaningful and lasting career in education.
Graduate Programs in Mathematics
Pursue your dream of becoming a math teacher, scholar, leader, or researcher with our graduate Mathematics programs.聽 Choose from master鈥檚 degree, a PhD in Math Education or a certificate so you can teach college math or even lead math programs in K鈥12 schools.
These programs boost your math skills. They also give you practical tools to improve classrooms and change lives for the better.
