Research & Publications

Research Informing the PSI Project

Dr. Emily Girardin鈥檚 dissertation included a needs assessment and intervention study focused on American Sign Language fluency as a foundational competency for future school interpreters. This research informed interventions that the PSI Project further developed and implemented.

Featured Publication

Complexities in Educational Interpreting

The PSI Project was featured in the second edition of Complexities in Educational Interpreting: An Investigation into Patterns of Practice. The book presented research that informed the School Interpreting Series competencies and the interdisciplinary concentration implemented at the University of Northern 黑料社区 from 2021鈥2026.

PSI Project Co-Directors Dr. Leilani Johnson and Dr. Emily Girardin, along with External Evaluator Dr. Marty Taylor, were among the authors contributing to the second edition.

The Current State of Interpreter Education

The PSI Project was featured in a national examination of ASL鈥揈nglish interpreter education published in Sign Language Studies in 2025. The article explored the structure and current state of interpreter education programs across the United States.

Developing the School Interpreting Series

Dr. Emily Girardin, Angie O鈥橞leness, and Kelli Stein presented Preparing School Interpreters: Redesigning Educational Interpreting Curricula to Reflect an Interdisciplinary Lens聽at the 2022 Conference of Interpreter Trainers in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

The poster described the curriculum review process and the initial development of the 16-credit School Interpreting Series, including contributions from interdisciplinary subject-matter experts.

PSI Project Intervention Study

Dr. Emily Girardin presented a poster on the PSI Project鈥檚 intervention study at the 2025 Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf National Conference. The presentation shared the study’s findings and introduced attendees to resources developed through the PSI Project.

Sharing Complexities in Educational Interpreting

PSI Project Director Dr. Emily Girardin joined several co-authors of Complexities in Educational Interpreting in sharing the book’s research through conference presentations, workshops, and other professional learning opportunities.
