The UNC College of Osteopathic Medicine is dedicated to making medical education accessible and affordable. To help reduce the financial burden of medical school, UNC COM offers a variety of听merit- and need-based scholarships听that recognize academic excellence, leadership, service, and alignment with our mission to prepare compassionate physicians who serve their communities.听
Scholarship Opportunities
Dean鈥檚 Award
The听Dean鈥檚 Award听is a听merit-based recruitment scholarship听granted at the time of admission to up to听30 incoming students听who听demonstrate听the highest academic achievement.听Selection听is based on a听composite evaluation听of MCAT score, overall and science GPAs (including graduate science GPA), and GPA trajectory. Each award totals听$40,000, distributed as听$10,000 per year听for up to four years of study. Recipients are notified of their听selection听at the time of admission.听
Phelps Family Scholarship
The听Phelps Family Scholarship听honors UNC COM鈥檚 inaugural class by supporting two outstanding听UNC alum听who听demonstrate听excellence and commitment to community service.
Each scholarship provides听$30,000 toward first-year tuition听and may be renewed for up to three听additional听years, for a maximum of听$120,000 per student. Renewal decisions are听made by the UNC COM Scholarship Committee based on the students听remaining听in good academic and professional standards.听The Phelps Scholarship application is听embedded听in the UNC COM supplemental application, which听is sent听to听qualified听students via an听invitation.听
The Phelps Family Scholarship was created to inspire others to give and is guided by the core values of听C.A.P.:听

- Achieve:听Persevere and overcome challenges to reach your goals.听
- Pay it forward:听Make a positive difference in the lives of others through generosity and kindness.听
This award reflects UNC COM鈥檚 mission to prepare future physicians who embody service, achievement, and compassion.听
UNC Foundation and Alumni-Funded Awards
UNC COM students may also apply for听institutional and donor-funded scholarships听made possible through the听UNC Foundation听and generous alumni contributions.听
These scholarships support students who听demonstrate:听
- Academic excellence and leadership听
- Financial need听
- Commitment to rural or underserved communities听
- Dedication to service and the osteopathic profession听
Incoming students are automatically听considered for听admission-based scholarships at the time of acceptance. Continuing students may apply annually for donor-supported awards through the UNC Scholarship Application鈥攁ccessible in your MyUNC account under the Financial Aid tab (a valid Bear number is required).

Note: COM students are assigned a dedicated financial aid counselor specializing in health professions education.
Students are encouraged to:
Complete the FAFSA each year
- Submit any supplemental scholarship applications by posted deadlines
- Review eligibility, selection criteria, and timelines as new awards are established
